LAILY HIDAYATI, NOER (2008) AN ANALYSIS ON NITA SAYURI’S SUFFERING IN ARTHURGOLDEN’S NOVEL “MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA”. Other thesis, University of Muhammadiyah Malang.
Literature is the expression of phenomena that happen in human’s life such as their problem, struggle, love, sacrifice, sorrow, or conflict. It means that literary work expresses the human lives and ideas in a beautiful language. One literary works are novel. By reading novel, people can get so many values and message about the human life that is complex with many conflicts to be faced. “Memoirs of A Geisha” is a kind of novel that the story is easy to understand. Besides, the problems faced by the main character are interesting to be analyzed. The purposes of this analysis are to know Nitta Sayuri’s suffering and to know how Nitta Sayuri solves her sufferings. This analysis used a descriptive qualitative research design because there was no treatment as in experimental research. This analysis describes condition or situation. The approach used in analyzing this novel was objective approach because the researcher did not study about the author’s life and background of the work but just analyzed the work itself. The object of this study was the novel with the title “Memoirs of a Geisha” written by Arthur Golden. The result of this analysis showed that Nitta Sayuri felt suffered when she faced many difficulties in her life. They were mental suffering and physical sufferring. The mental sufferings faced by Nitta Sayuri were (1) Being separated from her sister Satsu, (2) The death of Nitta’s parents and (3) The Committing of treason that was done by Pumpkin. While Nitta Sayuri’s physical suffering were (1) Nitta Sayuri was injured because she was asked by Hatsumomo to ruin Mameha’s kimono, (2) Nitta Sayuri injured because she was accused as a thief stealing the Hatsumomo’s jewelry and the last (3) she was hurt because she fell down from the roof when she was running out from Okiya. Finally, the ways to solve Nitta Sayuri’s suffering were following Mameha becoming a Geisha and trying to find someone who support her living cost and take care along her life, “danna”.
