Abstract
As the time developed, the needs to use technology is also growing, teenagers and early childhood especially students grow up in a highly developed information era. Therefore, literacy needs are needed so that the society can understand and use social media actively and critically. The discussion about social media is very interesting to be discussed, because there are many aspects that affect the pros and cons of some sites on social media itself. Parents and teachers play a crucial role to supervise and provide social media literacy understanding to the students. This study aims at investigating how is the understanding and intensity of social media usage of elementary school students in Muhammadiyah 09 Malang. This study uses qualitative research with a descriptive approach. In this study, there are 29 students as the respondents. The data collection is done by providing interview questionnaires to principals, class teachers, class students and some parents of students. The data analysis uses data reduction and data presentation. The result shows that elementary school students in the 4th grade Al-Kindi tend to use social media as their own entertainment. The students already got some guides and social media literacy understanding, and their intensity of social media usage is quite high, around 1-3 hours per day. Hence, we can conclude that even though the intensity of social media usage is quite high, the students are not addicted and even try to access what they should not, it is because of the parent’s guide and social media literacy understanding given by the school.
