Abstract
The coastal area is an area that has natural resource potential. About 60% of the world's population lives in the coastal area and is expected to increase to 75% by 2025. Coastal areas have problems with the availability of clean water and nutrition which are the main issues and must be considered because this concerns the survival of the community, the community will never escape from water as raw material to meet their needs including carrying out activities such as household activities and farming. Based on the problems found in the coastal area, strategic steps are needed to solve the problem. Steps that can be taken is to reduce the level of salinity in seawater in the coastal area, so that the sea water can be used by coastal communities to meet their basic needs. The method of decreasing salinity can be done by desalination. This study aims to determine the concentration of hydrochloric acid (HCl) is appropriate to reduce salinity in seawater, decrease salinity with zeolite hydrochloric acid activation, and the composition of desalinated and freshwater seawater that is suitable for growth and yield of mustard plants in floating raft hydroponic systems. on December 3, 2018 to June 9, 2019, located at Greenhouse Mulyoagung Village, Dau District, Malang Regency. The experiment was conducted using a non factorial randomized block design, where there were 11 (eleven) treatments repeated 3 times. Observation variables consisted of EC (mS / cm), TDS (ppm), water temperature (oC), environmental temperature (oC), plant height (cm), number of leaves (strands), stem diameter (mm) leaf area (cm2) , chlorophyll index, wet weight (gram), dry weight (gram), and root length (cm). The results showed that the concentration of hydrochloric acid (HCl) for the activation of zeolites which can reduce salinity in sea water quite well was at 2 N HCl concentrations and the composition of desalination seawater suitable for caisin mustard plants was found in the P3 treatment consisting of 20% desalination seawater and 80% fresh water.
