English is the most important foreign language in Indonesia and becomes the compulsory subject in school. Based on the 2004 curriculum, there are four skills that have to be mastered by the students, they are listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Concerning reading instruction, the teacher has an important position in enabling the students to understand the reading passage, in creating an interactive atmosphere in teaching and learning process, as well as in motivating and stimulating the students to learn. Therefore, the teacher must have the appropriate teaching techniques in order that the problems in teaching and learning activities can be handled and the goal can be achieved successfully. This research was intended to observe the differences of teaching techniques employed by male and female English teachers at SMA Negeri 1 Nganjuk. The method used in this study was descriptive qualitative design. The object of this study was the teaching techniques employed by male and female English teachers in teaching reading comprehension for the second year students of SMA Negeri 1 Nganjuk. Thus, the writer used observation and interview in obtaining the data. After the data had been collected, the writer analyzed the data based on the results of observation and interview, and then tried to find the differences of teaching techniques employed by those male and female English teachers. The results of this study showed that the female English teacher used more techniques than the male English teacher. The conclusion of this study was that the female English teacher was more creative than the male English teacher because she applied more techniques in teaching reading comprehension. Based on the conclusion above, it is hoped that this study will be useful for the teachers and other researchers.
