Abstract

This research investigated ESP Teachers’ Problem in Teaching Speaking to Mechanical Engineering Department at University of Muhammadiyah Malang. The purpose of study are: (1) to find out kind of problems faced by ESP teacher on teaching ESP Speaking in Mechanical Engineering Department at University of Muhammadiyah Malang and 2) to find out the solutions by ESP teacher to overcome the problems on teaching ESP Speaking in Mechanical Engineering Department at University of Muhammadiyah Malang. This research used qualitative design. The subjects of the study are the ESP teachers at University of Muhammadiyah Malang. The data was taken from the classroom observation and interview with the ESP teacher to know the ESP teachers' problems in English teaching speaking learning process. The results showed that there are five problems arised such as: (1) challenge in Managing Low or uneven participation, (2) the urge to use mother tongue language, (3) challenge in motivating learners to learn English and speak up, (4) minimum references and resources to provide learning materials, (5) controlling troublesome students. Furthermore, there are five solutions to overcome that problems such as: (1) establishing closer relationship with students, (2) asking learners to try activities which have relation with English Language, (3) motivating learners to learn English and get they know English for the future, (4) trying to find interesting material and interesting media from any sources, and (5) controlling the students kindly.
