Abstract

The study was conducted in the context of ELED UMM students’ interest in choosing American Studies as an elective course. Therefore, there are two purposes of this study namely: (1) to know the factors which make the students 2014/2015 interested in choosing American Studies as their elective course and (2) to get information about what the expectation of the students 2014/2015 in attending the American Studies. The method used in this study was a qualitative research. For the instrument, the researcher used a questionnaire and interview in order to know the factors which make the students interested in choosing American Studies and their expectation in taking American Studies class. Moreover, the research subject of this study was student’s years in academic years 2014/2015 English Language Teaching Department who chose American Studies as elective course. The findings showed that there were two factors which make students interested in choosing American Studies as elective course: extrinsic and intrinsic factors. First, extrinsic factor such as: (1) the students choose American Studies because of the favorite lecturer; (2) recommendations from their friend in choosing American Studies as elective course; and (3) the subject matter is very interesting, because learning about pop-culture. Second the intrinsic factors such as: (1) The students’ own consciousness; and (2) students’ curiosity. Meanwhile, the student’s expectation is having study tour to the American embassy aimed to know more about America.
