Abstract

Communication and culture becomes an entity which cannot be separated. Each cultural differences that a communicator has could make even a slight difference on a message delivered to a communion. These differences exists due to the fact that culture is a habit which passed down from the original generation and or environment where the culture itself was made. The foreign students which are studying in University of Muhammadiyah Malang also felt and had direct contact with those differences. The foreign students whom enroll in UMM Internship Grant in 2018 said that there were some occurences that made them thunderstruck or even annoyed while they were living in Malang for more than 3 months. This descriptive research is using the qualitative approach and complementary analysis method. The writer is using LaRay M. Barna’s intercultural communication hindrance theory, “Six Stumbling Blocks”, and Gudykunst and Kim’s intercultural communication model. The scope of this research covers the foreign students’ experiences when they were studying Indonesian language and culture with their designated lecturer in UMM Internship Grant program and their daily lives in Malang in 2018. This research has resulted some findings; firstly, ethnocentrism is the base of most intercultural communication hindrance faced by the foreign students. Secondly, the behavior and words used by the program’s lecturer in and outside of the class could inflict some misunderstandings and discomfort to them. Privacy violation is also what the foreign students usually face. Thirdly, even if it’s a class discussion topic, war and politics are still sensitive to be talk about. Fourth, external factor such as the noise from outside of the class could also disturb the cosiness and make the foreign students lost their focus while studying in class.
