Abstract

One of the language variations commonly used is slang. The creation of slang languages is inseparable from morphological processes including the derivation process. From this linguistic process, there was a new lexeme that contributes to the growth of the slang language found normally in various forms of communication; one of which can be found on the social media platform Instagram. In this study, the researcher focused on slang words in Instagram account of Slangcards. This research was aimed to identify (1) kinds of derivation process in slang words that were posted by Instagram account of Slangcards and (2) investigate the reason behind the choice of the most frequent type of derivation process of slang words found in Instagram account of Slangcards. This research employed qualitative design. The data were slang words contained in photos and captions on the Instagram account of Slangcards from May to June 2018. The researcher is the primary research instrument in this case study and supported by three secondary instruments, namely: (1) observation note (2) document or artifact analysis and (3) library research. This research revealed that there are 14 slangs constructed by derivation process found in Instagram account of Slangcards from May to June 2018. Conversion is the type of process that has the highest frequency of usage compared to Affixation, Compounding, and Wishy-Washy Word or Reduplication. Based on the theory, this type is considered to be an effective way to produce a new word without necessarily having difficulty in modifying the root word. As in fact, a word can be a symbol, meaning that one word can represent a different kind of interpretation and grammar class.
