Abstract

Background: Infectious diseases that occur in humans due to pathogenic bacteria are increasing. The combination of plant extracts is known to have a higher effectiveness than the single extract. Chromolaena odorata leaves and Rhoeo discolor leaves have chemical compounds of flavonoids, saponins, carotenoids, anthocyanins, terpenoids, ferulic acids, chlorogenic acid, vanillic acid and steroid compounds that can kill bacteria. Objective: This study aimed to determine the antibacterial activity of a combination of ethanol extract of leaves of Chromolaena odorata (EDCO) and Rhoeo discolor (EDRD) leaves against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Method: The method used is the disc diffusion method by using a combination solution of EDCO and EDRD extract with different concentrations. In Staphylococcus aureus bacteria, concentration 1 = EDCO: EDRD (6000 μg: 720 μg), concentration 2 = EDCO: EDRD (12000 μg: 720 μg), concentration 3 = EDCO: EDRD (12000 μg: 360 μg) while Escherichia coli bacteria, concentration 1 = EDCO: EDRD (6000 μg: 8000 μg), concentration 2 = EDCO: EDRD (12000 μg: 8000 μg). Positive control (chloramphenicol) and negative control (10% DMSO). Results & Conclusions: The results of testing the antibacterial activity of a combination of EDCO and EDRD extracts against Staphylococcus aureus resulted in an average diameter of the inhibition zone with a concentration of 1 = 10,49 mm; concentration 2 = 10,23 mm; concentration 3 = 10,13 mm. In Escherichia coli with a concentration of 1 = -; concentration 2 = -; concentration = -. It can be concluded, that concentration 1 has the average diameter of the largest inhibition zone in Staphylococcus aureus bacteria and for Escherichia coli bacteria there is no diameter inhibition zone.
