Abstract

The researcher found the case that the most difficult text faced by students in SMP Ma’arif was narrative text. According to their English teacher, students got the difficulties because lack of vocabulary, the used of simple past tense, and comprehending the moral value. The researcher categorize the difficulties in narrative text based on the some aspects of the text such as the words, structure, language feature, character, setting, plot, moral value, and point of view that should be mastered in order to comprehend the text, especially for English final examination. Then, this study was conducted to investigate the students’ difficulties in comprehending narrative text. This study was conducted at SMP Ma’arif 03 Batu, involving 29 ninth grade students of class A in the academic year of 2018-2019 as the samples. The researcher used purposive sampling method to get the sample from the best class. 10-items of closed-ended questionnaire were used to collect the data. Then, the findings show that the students face difficulty related to comprehending structure, point of view, and the words of narrative text.
