Abstract

This study aims to investigate the constraints of social adaptation and communication patterns used by Sumbawa students in establishing social relations with local people in Dadaprejo Village, Junrejo Subdistrict, especially in the context of social adaptation and intercultural communication. Through an intercultural communication study approach, this research highlights the aspects that influence the social adaptation process of migrant students. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method. The research participants consisted of students who had lived in Dadaprejo Village for one to two years. The data collection approach involved observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation to gain comprehensive insights into their social adaptation experiences and interactions with the local community. In the process of adapting to a new environment, students from Sumbawa experience several important stages, including the initial pleasant period of the honeymoon phase, the frustration phase, the readjusment phase, and the resolution phase. The obstacles experienced by Sumbawa students are language (linguistic barriers) and communication styles. The communication pattern used by the majority of Sumbawa students is using the Primary communication pattern. Then, the indicators of their success in adapting show the ability to learn, openness to differences, and flexibility in dealing with change.
