Abstract

Background: Overweight is the condition of a person who has a body weight that exceeds the ideal body weight (Body Mass Index ≥ 23.00). Factors that cause a person to experience overweight is sedentary lifestyle. In someone who is overweight there is a buildup of excessive fat which makes it difficult for a person to move flexibly, besides physical movements will also decrease which will make the muscles experience shortening and eventually stiffness will result in decreased flexibility of the muscle. Objective: To determine the relationship of overweight in adolescents to the flexibility level of the muscle erector spine. Research Methods: The study design used was cross sectional with a sample of 91 people, then overweight was measured by the assessment of Body Mass Index, Level of flexibility of themuscle erector spine measured by sit and reach test and physical activity with International Physical Activity Questionnaire ( IPAQ). Results: This study was tested by test chi-square and obtained a significance value smaller than 0.05 (0.00> 0.05), which means H1 is accepted and it can be said that there is anrelationship overweight in adolescents to the level of flexibility of the muscle erector spine. Conclusion: There is an association of overweight with the level of flexibility of the muscle erector spine in adolescents.
