Extracurricular is basic in the minds and interests of the students because this program is not only enjoyable, but important. It is fuller of meaning than the regular curriculum to many high school students, and it offers opportunity for direct participation (Hansen, 1957:326). The students who participate in English language extracurricular program class has motivation to increase their skill in speaking English. Therefore, the teacher must suit and develop techniques in order to meet the educational needs for the students. Therefore, the writer is interested in investigating this phenomenon as reflected in the title of this study “the technique of teaching speaking in English language extracurricular program at SMU-N II Batu”. The purposes of this study are to know the technique and its implementation used by the teacher in teaching speaking in English language extracurricular program at SMU- N II Batu. In this study, the subject was the English teacher who taught in English language extracurricular. Meanwhile, the instruments used to get the data of this study were observation and interview. The result of this study showed that the teacher used several techniques in teaching speaking, they were; focus group discussion, dialogue, role plays, games, simulation, watching movies, debate, quizzes, sort story telling and singing a song. The implementation of teaching speaking techniques at English language extracurricular program showed that the teacher used more than one technique in each meeting, such as sort story telling technique combined by discussion, and ended up the session with singing a song together. To avoid the students’ boredom in the class. The teacher asked the students to sing an English song together or by giving some quizzes to the students, the teacher also applied watching action movie technique in multimedia laboratory. Besides, a technique such as grammarian monopoly game was used in two or more meetings because it was considered that the technique was still interesting for students in the class. The other techniques such as focus group discussion, role play, simulation were also applied in the class, because those techniques were considered easy to be conducted in extracurricular class.
