Abstract

Background: Laceration is a type of open wound with an irregular wound border that affects the skin tissue to the underlying tissue. Most lacerations require treatment for tissue repair. Turmeric rhizome extract contains curcumin which has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, and is able to enhance the secretion of growth factor, so it might be expected to affect the laceration wound radius reduction. Objective: Determine the effect of topical application of turmeric rhizome (Curcuma longa) extract on the laceration wound radius reductions of white male rats (Rattus norvegicus strain wistar). Methods: True experimental with post test only control group design. Samples were divided into 4 groups, the positive control group with laceration wounds were not given any treatment, treatment groups 1, 2, and 3 with laceration wounds were each given turmeric rhizome extract with concentrations of 5%, 10% and 20% on day 0, 4 and 7. Research Result: One-way ANOVA test showed a significance p-value = 0,000, which meant there were significant differences in wound area between treatment groups. The Bonferoni post-hoc test showed a significant difference in wound radius, p = 0,000 in each comparison between the positive control group compared to the treatment group on day 11. The smallest concentration (5%) had started to show a significant effect of reducing wound radius with p-value = 0,000. Conclusion: Turmeric rhizome (Curcuma longa) extract which applied topically has an effect on the laceration radius reductions of white male rats (Rattus norvegicus strain wistar).
