Abstract

Background: Hydropic degeneration is one of the early stage in liver fibrosis which progressively turn into chirrosis. Hydropic degeneration occurs as the result of free radicals from lead. Phyllanthus niruri L. contains flavonoid (quercetin), vitamin C, alkaloid, tannin, lignan, and terpene that can inhibit free radicals activity by lead compound. Objective: To determine the effect of Phyllanthus niruri L. extract on hydropic degeneration percentage of early stage liver fibrosis rat model. Methods: True experimental with post-test only control group design. Fifteen rats were divided into five groups, KN as normal group, K- was given lead 100mg/200grBW/day, P1; P2; P3 were given lead and Phyllanthus niruri L. extract 20; 40; 80 (mg/200grBW/day). All data were analyzed using ANOVA, post hoc bonferroni, and linear regression test. Results and Discussion: Extract of Phyllanthus niruri L. had a significant effect to hydropic degeneration percentage (ANOVA p=0.026). Extract of Phyllanthus niruri 80mg/200grBW/day was the dose to hydropic degeneration percentage (post hoc bonferroni test p=0.035). Extract of Phyllanthus niruri had 56,7% in effecting to decrease hydropic degeneration percentage in rat’s liver. The decreasing due to flavonoid (quercetin), vitamin C, alcaloid, tannin, lignan, and terpene in Phyllanthus niruri L. extract inhibit free radicals activity. Conclusion: Phyllanthus niruri extract with dose 80mg/200grBW/day decreased the percentage of hydropic degeneration in early stage liver fibrosis rat model.
