Abstract

Retiring period is a period where one will experiencing job discharge based on age factor. During this moment one will experiencing changing in his life pattern. The changing of life pattern might cause one to feel anxiety when they suppose to face retirement. In this area emotional intelligence will help to reduce the anxiety, because basically one who had highemotional intelligence will be able to handle his state of emotion and able to face the demand and the pressure of the environment. This study is a correlation study which is to found out the relationship between emotional intelligence and anxiety toward retirement. This study is conducted at the office of Regional Government of Tulungagung Regency. Sample technique used in this study is purposive sampling with several samples of employees about 52­55 years old. Data collection technique is by using emotional intelligence scale and anxiety scale toward retirement and using product moment correlation analysis of Karl Pearson. From the data analysis result using SPSS version 13,00, we could found out the correlation coefficient (r) = ­0,667, error probability (p) = 0,000, p<0,01 and determinant coefficient (r2) = 0,444, therefore we could conclude that there are significantly negative relationship between emotional intelligence and anxiety of facing retirement, which means that the higher emotional intelligence there will be lower anxiety of facing retirement. Therefore hypothesis being proposed is accepted, while contribution of Emotional Intelligence toward Anxiety of Facing Retirement is 44,4% and the rest of it that is 55,6% were caused by other factor
