Abstract

The purposes of this research are to know the strategy of teaching speaking skill used by teacher at tenth grade of SMA Muhammadiyah 3 Batu, to know the problem faced by the teacher in teaching speaking skill in class at tenth grade of SMA Muhammadiyah 3 Batu, to know how the teacher solves the problems in teaching speaking skill at tenth grade of SMA Muhammadiyah 3 Batu. The research design was descriptive qualitative. The subject of the study was one the teacher at SMA Muhammadiyah 3 Batu. Moreover, to collect the data in this study the researcher used two kinds of instruments, they are observation and interview. In this study, the researcher used semi-structured interview, the researcher uses a set of predetermined questions and the subject answer the question freely without any alternative answers. Based on the result of data analysis, the researcher concluded that: (1) Data reduction, the strategies of teaching speaking used by the teacher in using direct speaking and role play. (2) Data display, the problem faced by the teacher in using strategies of teaching speaking were some students were difficult to arrange sentences were solved by excavating their ideas. Then, students’ difficulty to understand the vocabularies was solved by helping students to translate the meaning. Students are also encouraged to keep speaking by using English in the class. In summary, the strategies of teaching English hold out and important role play in order to be successful in teaching and learning process. The teacher used direct speaking and role play strategies. The researcher gives some suggestion to English teacher in SMA Muhammadiyah 3 Batu. The researcher suggests the teacher to make more fun and interesting activities in teaching speaking English. In addition, the teacher needs to give more activity to make students do not feel bored in the class.
