Abstract

Using language in communication does not always work smoothly. Misunderstanding may often occur in daily life. Misunderstanding and misinterpretation do not only occur in oral expressions, but also in written expressions such as the interpretation of an authors’ expression expressed in short stories. In understanding written expressions people need to know the context, in this case, who, where and when the expressions are made. Deixis is the theory which deals with pointing something in terms of person, time and space. The purposes of this study were to investigate the deixis found in Edgar Allan Poe’s short story The Mask of the Red Death and to identify the types of the deixis used in Edgar Allan Poe’s short story The Mask of the Red Death.
