Abstract

Complience of political information needs is a condition where the fulfillment of information needs about politics in students, where the information needs themselves occur when there is an information vacuum in the individual itself. The current political phenomenon, media is used as a means of reporting electoral issues, especially social media. Line Today is one of the media news presenters incorporated in the Line application. The Nielsen survey states that social media users are dominated by millennials (20-34 years). In this study, researchers aimed to describe the fulfillment of political information needs through Line Today. The theoretical foundation used in this study is the Uses and Gratification theory wherein the theory plays an active role in selecting media sources to meet their needs. This study uses quantitative research methods with a survey descriptive approach. This research was conducted on 2014 communication science students at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang. Line application users were 122 students in the study period as a population, with the sampling technique using purposive sampling. The researchers took 94 respondents from the Slovin formula. This study uses descriptive analysis techniques by looking at the results of frequency distribution data and mean. The results of this study indicate that the mean obtained for 32.85 is high in the range of 27.5 ≥ 35.75 in table 5.20. The fulfillment of political information sequentially is cognitive indicator category 9.45, personal integration 9.19, social integration 8.55 and affective 5.66. Based on these results it can be concluded that the political information needs of UMM communication science students in the line line 2014 can be fulfilled through Line Today media of 32.85 which belongs to the high category.
