Abstract

Background: Inguinal Hernia was ranked in the top 10 hospitalization in 2017. In Jombang Regency, based on secondary data from Surgery Department of Al-Aziz Hospital in 2017-2018 there was a significant increase in patients diagnosed with inguinal hernia. Objective: Determine the correlation between heavy work and inguinal hernia in Surgery Department of Al-Aziz Hospital, Jombang Regency from 2017-2018. Methods: Analytical study with cross-sectional design. Secondary data were obtained from medical record. Sampling technique used was total sampling. Samples were patients diagnosed with inguinal hernia according to inclusion criteria. Independent variable was heavy work with ordinal scale, divided into 3 levels, light, intermediate, and heavy work. Dependent variable was inguinal hernia with nominal scale, i.e. lateral inguinal hernia and medial inguinal hernia. Obtained data were analyzed and statistically tested using Chi-Square correlation test. Results and Discussion: Cross-tabulation result showed the highest patient characteristics were male (91.7%), lateral inguinal hernia (86%). Chi-Square correlation test showed significance value of 0.013 < 0.05 (α = 0.05), which means that there was a correlation between heavy work and inguinal hernia. Heavy work may cause pressure of abdominal wall muscles. Conclusion: There was a correlation between heavy work and inguinal hernia in Al-Aziz Hospital, Jombang Regency. Keywords: Heavy work, Inguinal Hernia.
