Abstract

Learning styles has an important role in learning process. It is important for the teacher to know the variation of learning styles used by autistic students because the information of the variation can help the students solve the problems in the learning process. This research has research problem namely the types of learning styles used by autistic students in learning English at SMP Muhammadiyah 2 Malang and the obstacles for the autistic students in using the learning styles in learning English at SMP Muhammadiyah 2 Malang. The research objectives in this research are, the first to describe the learning styles used by autistic students in learning English at SMP Muhammadiyah 2 Malang (Inclusive School) and the second to identify the obstacles of autistic students in using learning styles in learning English at SMP Muhammdiyah 2 Malang. The method used in this research was qualitative with one autistic student in grade VII-B and the teacher at SMP Muhammadiyah 2 Malang as the subject. The data collecting method were participant observation and semi-structured interview. Accordingly, the instrument used in this research were field notes and interview guideline. As results of this research, there were three learning styles used by autistic student in learning English such as gestalt, hands-on, and auditory learning style. In addition, the autistic student in learning English have three obstacles such as difficulty in spelling, concentration, and awareness of the importance of the task.
