Abstract

Jigsaw is one type of cooperative learning comprising instructional methods in which teacher divides students into small groups and they then work together to help one another learn academic content. It lets students share the knowledge and encourage them to be brave in explaining and presenting the material to their friends Therefore, the students will search and find information as many as possible and they have much more knowledge. This research focused on the implementation of Jigsaw in teaching reading in English class at SMAN Pasirian grade XI Science. The purposes of this study were (1) to analyze how Jigsaw is implemented in teaching reading at SMAN Pasirian grade XI Science; (2) to analyze the difficulties faced by the teacher in implementing Jigsaw in teaching reading at SMAN Pasirian grade XI Science; and (3) to investigate the coping ways taken by the teacher in implementing Jigsaw in teaching reading at SMAN Pasirian grade XI Science. This research applied qualitative method. To collect the data, the researcher used interview and observation as the instruments. The subjects of the study involved the students of grade XI Science and an English teacher. Furthermore, the findings showed that there were three stages in implementing Jigsaw, they were planning stage, implementation stage, and evaluating stage. The teacher usually faced difficulties in terms of time limitation, class noisiness and different level of comprehension of students. Moreover, the solution coped by the teacher were well preparation before teaching, controlling the class, and encouraging students.
