Abstract

Code-mixing is a phenomenon of using two or more languages in the same sentence. Code-mixing also occurs at teaching learning in school. Since English teachers in Indonesia do not use full English in teaching learning, they are sometimes using Bahasa Indonesia as it was their local language. This researech was conducted in order to answer two research problems: (1) The types of code-mixing used by the teacher of SMKN 3 Sumbawa Besar, and (2) The reasons of the teacher using code-mixing at SMKN 3 Sumbawa Besar. This research used descriptive qualitative design, because this research related to the aspect of reality that could not be measured or quantified and focused on explanations and understanding of life. This research was conducted at SMKN 3 Sumbawa Besar. The subject of this research was an English teacher in SMKN 3 Sumbawa Besar. The researcher explained the results of this research into two points. First, the first type that the researcher got was insertion which had forty-seven inventions such as score (Noun), guess (Verb), some people (Noun Phrase), and slowly (Adverb). The second type was alternation which had twenty-four alternations such as you have to say in English (Independent Clause), and when you get a huge achievement in your study (Dependent Clause). The last type which had eleven inventions was congruent lexicalization like library and dictionary. Second, there were three reasons why the teacher used code-mixing during learning process, such as: repetition which used for clarification, intention of clarifying the speech content for interlocutor, and expression of group identity.
