Abstract

At present the nursing home is an elderly shelter as a place of care and elderly daily needs. In life in nursing homes, caregivers play an important role in elderly care. Good and intimate interpersonal communication between caregivers and old age is the key to accepting the comfort of the elderly to live in a home. This study aims to study how interpersonal communication in advanced care at Pondok Lansia Al-Islah Malang. This study uses the theory of Social Penetration or Social Penetration by Irwin Altman and Dalmas Taylor in 1973 namely adding a layer of personality to open theory and FIRO theory by Schutz 1955 that explains interpersonal relations in relation to each individual for each individual. The research method used is a case study. Where the research used is qualitative. The subjects of this study used purposive sampling technique and obtained 6 subjects, 3 caregivers and 3 elderly in Pondok Lansia Al-Islah Malang. This study uses data collection techniques for interview, observation and documentation. The results of this study show how the interpersonal communication process in elderly care is introductory, familiarity, openness, empathy, support, positive attitude, and support. So that it can deny the interpersonal communication of caregivers and the elderly is characterized by the establishment of a relationship of mutual trust and intimacy that makes the elderly comfortable and not supportive. While communication encountered in caregivers' interpersonal communication with the elderly is increased hearing and elderly logistics that often change
