Motivation is the crucial element in learning process. It influences learning process, quality of thinking, and information processing as well as an individual’s motivation to learn. There are two types of motivation: intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Students need motivation to increase their interest in learning English. Therefore, the writer was interested in investigating this problem. This study was entitled “A study on The Students’ Motivation in Learning English in First Year of SMPN 1 Sumbawa Besar”. The purpose of this study was to know the students’ motivation and the most dominant motivation of first year students of SMPN 1 Sumbawa Besar. In this study, the writer used the descriptive qualitative design. The population was the first year students of SMPN 1 Sumbawa Besar. The sample was 68 students. The instrument was questionnaire and observation. The data of this study were analyzed by using the procedures such as developing research instruments, analyzing the data, and taking conclusion. The result of this study showed that 27 students (39.70%) had very high motivation as shown by their score of 61-75. 39 students (57.35%) had high motivation in learning English with the score of 40-60. There were 2 students (2.94%) had average motivation with the score of 31-45. In general, their motivation was high. The writer also found that intrinsic motivation was more dominant or influential than extrinsic motivation. It could be seen from the mean of intrinsic motivation that was 34.01 and extrinsic motivation 23.92.
