Abstract

ABSTRACT Oashe, Cendikiane Beninge, 2019. The Association between Stress and the Emergence of Recurrent Minor Aphthous Stomatitis in Students of the Faculty of Medicine University of Muhammadiyah Malang. Final Assignment, Faculty of Medicine, University of Muhammadiyah Malang. Advisor: (I) Iwan Sis Indrawanto, (II) Gita Sekar Prihanti. Background: Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is a mucosal disorder that most often occurs with a clinical manifestation of recurrent and painful single or multiple ulcer. One of the factors that can trigger RAS is psychological stress. Medical students have high stressors due to tight schedules and different learning systems from senior high school. Therefore medical students tend to have higher stress levels especially for first year. Objective: To investigate the relationship between the level of stress experienced by UMM medical students on the emergence of recurrent aphthous stomatitis. Method: This study is an observational analytic study with cross sectional approach using purposive sampling technique. Data was collected using validated PSS (Perceived Stress Scale) and RASDX (Reccurent Aphthous Stomatitis Diagnosis) questionnaires. Data was analyzed using Chi-Square test. Result: The result of the chi-square test in this study obtained a p value of 0.002 (p <0.05) which suggested that there is a significant relationship between the level of stress experienced by UMM medical students on the emergence of RAS. Conclusion: There is an association between the level of stress on the emergence of recurrent aphthous stomatitis in UMM medical students. Key Terms: stress level, RAS, medical students.
