Abstract

ABSTRACT Rahmawati, Noverinda Intan. 2019. The Relations of the Use of Topical Acne Medication (Acne vulgaris) to The Complaints of Dry Eye Syndrome at UMM Hospital, Malang, East Java. Final Assigment, Medical Faculty, University of Muhammadiyah Malang. Advisors: (I) Bragastio Sidharta, (II) Indra Setiawan. Background: Dry Eye Syndrome is one of the most common ocular morbidity. 25% of patients who visited eye clinics report symptoms of dry eye, which raises public health problems and is one of the most common conditions seen by ophthalmologists whose worst effects cause decreased vision to blindness. The use of topical acne drugs is a risk factor for DES whose scientific evidence is still not strong enough. In a study by S. Ahlan Bayhan showed that topical acne treatment induced significant dry eye signs and symptoms of 51% after the use of topical acne drugs containing retinoid acid. Objective: To know the relation of the use of topical acne medication to the complaints of Dry Eye Syndrome at UMM Hospital. Methods: This research is an analytical observation used cross sectional design. The sampling technique used purposive sampling. The total samples was 40 samples consisted of 11 boys and 29 girls. Data was collected using SPEED Questionnaire. Meanwhile, the data was analyzed using Spearman test. Results: : Spearman test results obtained p = 0.755 (>0.05) which means there is no significant relations between the use of acne medication against DES complaints. Conclusions: There was no relation between the use of acne medication against DES complaints at UMM Hospital. Keywords: Topical Acne Drug, Dry Eye Syndrome, Eyes.
