Abstract

Translation is the communication of meaning from one language to another language. Behind a translation, the translator should understand on some aspects which are related to the translation process such as strategy, method, and technique. One of the features that used strategies in translation is idiom that sometimes misinterpreted. There are four strategies that are used to translate idiom; idiom of similar meaning and form, using an idiom of similar meaning but dissimilar form, translation by paraphrase and translation by omission. The aim of this research is to identify the meaning of idiom and translation strategy used in idioms found in Wonder movie. The research purposes of the research are (i) the meanings of idioms found in Wonder movie (ii) strategies used in translating idioms on the subtitle found in Wonder movie. A Qualitative method was used in analyzing the data. To analyze the data, Baker’s theory was used. The data are collected by watching the whole movie, finding the idiom between Source Text (ST) and Target Text (TT), and then examining the data. Meanwhile, the meaning of idiom was based on the context of the subtitle in Wonder movie. The result of this research showed that the researcher found idioms in Wonder movie. Those idioms were divisible into four translation strategies such as similar meaning and form (e.g. honeymoon and homework), using an idiom of similar meaning but dissimilar form (e.g. giving the eye and sweet dream), translation by paraphrase (e.g. settle down, by the way and bad egg) and translation by omission (e.g. get out of the way).
