Abstract

Students’ skill in conversation is a core aspect in teaching speaking. The language teaching is successful if the language serves as a system for the meaning of expression, and that success can be measured through students' ability to speak the language. It cannot be denied that in every language teaching, teachers find difficulty in the process of teaching. This research entitled the difficulties faced by English for Young Learners practice teachers in University of Muhammadiyah Malang. The research problem of this research is what are the ways of EYL practice teachers in conducting the speaking assessment at 3rd grade students of EYL class in University of Muhammadiyah Malang, what the difficulties faced by EYL practice teacher in assessing speaking and how to solve the difficulties. In this research, the researcher used descriptive qualitative design to obtain information concerning in statement problems by doing direct observation and interview. The subject of this research is the students as practice teacher at 3rd grade in English for young learner class in University of Muhammadiyah Malang. The practice teacher who becomes the research subject consists of four practice teachers, especially those who teach speaking. Based on the research findings, the researcher can conclude that all the EYL practice teachers use different media for instance game play, birthday card, baby photo art and short stories to do the speaking assesement such as fluency, pronounciation, and accuracy.The researcher also finds difficulties that are faced by the practice teachers of English for Young Learners in University of Muhammadiyah Malang such as; lack of accuracy of students’ pronunciation, inactivity of students to speak in classroom and students being shy and unconfident.
