Abstract

A learning medium has a principal position and is an integral part of the learning system. It is a teaching aid to transfer knowledge to the students. For the third graders of elementary school/madrasah with the theme of energy change and sub-theme of energy source, teachers require a medium to deliver the thematic materials, especially the subject matter of unit of time (hour). The model used in this study is ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation). Based on the explanation above, it is important to develop a medium to support the process of thematic learning. This study aimed to: (1) Figure out the development of JOIN medium on theme 6, sub-theme 1, third grade of elementary school/madrasah, and (2) Figure out the level of students’ response on the JOIN medium. This is a developmental study using the ADDIE model. The subjects were 17 third graders of Madrasah Mambaul Ulum Malang in the academic year of 2018/2019. The study has been conducted from January until March. The methods of data collection used were observation, interview, questionnaire, and documentation. The data analysis techniques used were the quantitative and qualitative data analysis. There are two results of the study. First, the JOIN is a thematic learning medium used as an aid by teachers to convey information to students.It is a big-sized craft resembles a Japanese fictional character Doraemon with an analogue clock on its body part and a pocket on its behind for storing the thematic materials and questions. Second, the students were enthusiastic and enjoyed the medium during the learning process. Based on the questionnaire, the students' response was 92% (very valid); teachers' response was 90%. Meanwhile, the materials expert reached 84%. Initially, the medium expert reached a percentage of 88% and later after a revision, it became 97%. As a conclusion, the JOIN medium has high validity and thus is suitable as supporting media during the teaching and learning process.
