Abstract

In a traditional way, the process of learning reading and writing skills in English only used a textbook and/or pen. According to Richards and rodgers,(2006), textbooks or papers are formed in such a way that the contents of the book will develop the functions and forms of language. Digital media become a basic need in this world. Many researchers demonstrated that reading on a computer screen is more fatiguing than reading a paper (Dillon, McKnight, and Richardson 1988). Nonetheless, ignoring the development of students’ digital literacy skills would be a thoughtless action. People use digital media to find information, to increase their knowledge or to communicate with others. Currently, many schools or university use digital media in the process of learning English activity. So that, the writer wants to investigate the students perceptions on learning English by reading on book or paper and writing on pen or keyboard habits in English. The writer used qualitative research design to provide in-depth understanding and get rich information about the students' perceptions on learning English by reading on book or screen and writing on pen or keyboard. Further, the questionnaire was used as a main technique in collecting the data from the entire participants that consisted of 10 students in Academic year 2014, 10 students in academic year 2015, 10 students in academic year 2016, and 10 students in academic year 2017 in English Department at University of Muhammadiyah Malang. The result shows, the students in English department in each semester prefer reading by using book because it makes the students more focused. Book is also efficient for beginner students because they can improve and increase their grammar and their vocabulary. They believe that when they read by using book they can manage their time enough. For writing, the students prefer writing by using keyboard because they believe that keyboard are easy and faster than handwriting. Keyboard will decrease the error in writing because the keyboard allow the reader to check the spelling automatically.
