Abstract

Education is basically to help people to be smart and to be good. However, it is not enough and also needs to make them to be wise. Meanwhile, it is often found that education only focuses on the academic side and less attention to the character. Consequently, students just grow up to be smart but characterless and this is very dangerous when they are in public. Therefore, it is urgent to promote character development and learning in new system of education called character education. The character education issues are also often packaged in the form of film to be presented because film is an art which can be a reflection of human life. Nil Battey Sannata film presents the character education taught by a mother to her daughter. Therefore, this film is good to analyze on term of character education. The purposes of this study are to identify character educations values found in Nil Battey Sannata film and to describe character education teaching in Nil Battey Sannata film. This study uses qualitative design with content analysis type because this study aims at observing and describing the character educations values and the way of the character educations teaching in Nil Battey Sannata film using oral or written data in the form of words (dialogue) and pictures (actions). The instruments used in this study are document and human. In collecting the data, the researcher watches Nil Battey Sannata film to know the story of the film, pays attention the dialogues and the actions, replays and rewatches the film, selects the data and the scenes, rewrites the subtitles of the dialogue and the scenes which could answer the problems of the study. The results of this study show that Nil Battey Sannata film described character education values taught by a mother to her daughter which is a family education because it is not from the school or teacher but from family, exactly mother. The mother taught values to her daughter in order to become a successful person. The character education values include: 1) religious; and 2) independent. Whereas, the way the character education teaching described in this film are in three ways. They are: 1) by giving a model for character values and learning strategies; 2) by giving opportunity grapple with real-life challenges; and 3) by promoting ethical values. In conclusion, Nil Battey Sannata film described character educations values and character educations teaching. This film contained good lessons which was important to be paid attention. It was because this film could inspire to teach the good character by giving a model. It was an effective way because it was easier to be imitated. It means that the teacher of good character should not talk more, but should do more.
