Abstract

Teaching method is a plan or procedure in teaching used by the teachers to obtain teaching learning objectives. There are several teaching methods that can be implemented by the teacher in teaching writing. Those teaching methods are Direct Method, Grammar Translation Method, Communicative Language Learning, Audiolingual Method, and Silent Way. The purpose of this research is to describe the teaching methods used by the teachers in teaching writing at SMPN 11 Malang and the implementation of teaching methods. The research design used was descriptive qualitative research. The subject of this research was the English teachers of the first year students at SMPN 11 Malang. The instruments used in this research were observation field notes, observation checklist and interview guide. The result of this research showed that the teachers who taught writing class on the first year students at SMPN 11 Malang used four teaching methods. Those teaching methods were Direct Method, Communicative Language Learning, Grammar Translation Method, and Audiolingual Method. Firstly, the teachers used Direct Method. In this method, the teachers used some techniques such as reading aloud, paragraph writing, question and answer using 5W+1H. Secondly, the teachers used Communicative Language Learning. The techniques used in this method were conversation activity, making sentences by using new vocabulary, the teacher encouraged the students to ask question, and the teacher asked the students to copy sentences from the board with notes on meaning and usage. Those activities can help the students to gain new vocabulary and follow the lesson actively. Thirdly, the teachers used Grammar Translation Method. In this method, the teachers used some techniques such as translation of literary passage, fill in the blank, and memorization. Those techniques encouraged the students to have good writing. Fourthly, the teachers used Audiolingual Method. In this method, the teachers used some techniques such as dialogue and drill.
