Abstract

This research was conducted based on the problems found by the researcher when he did observation in Mts Miftahul Ulum Pasuruan. The result of the preliminary study at the seventh grade showed that students’ academic performance in English speaking was below average. Besides they rarely practiced speaking English in the class. It is therefore, the researcher was chosen the direct method to improve students speaking skill. The objective of this research is to know whether the charade method improve English speaking ability of the seventh grade students at Mts Miftahul Ulum Pasuruan using the charade method. The research design of this research was Classroom Action Research (CAR). This research consisted of two cycles by following the procedure of action research, such as planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The first cycle and the second cycle had two meetings. The data of this research study were obtained through speaking test, observation checklist. This research took place at Mts Miftahul Ulum Pasuruan. The subjects of this research were 25 students of seventh grade. The findings of this research showed that the using of the direct method in teaching is claimed able to improve students’ speaking skill. The improvement could be seen from the qualitative data, the students could develop their ideas to produce a short sentence with better vocabulary and able to speak fluently with better pronunciation. They also enthusiastically joined the teaching and learning activities. Based on the quantitative data, the research showed that the total mean score of the class was higher after the posttest. For the cycle 1 obtain 68.4 and the cycle 2 obtain 78.4. From the data, it showed that students’ mean score for the speaking skill was improved.
