Abstract

“What You Might Find” board game is the game that provides students with the opportunity to learn the meaning of modal auxiliary “might” and challenges the students to think creatively about possibilities of what might be in the various locations in the game. This game is a combination of race games and word games. In this study, there are two research problems. The researcher wanted to find out the way the teacher implemented “What You Might Find” board game in teaching vocabulary, the advantages of “What You Might Find” board game, and the disadvantages of “What You Might Find” board game. The descriptive qualitative design is employed in this study. In this study, the researcher used observation field note and interview as instruments. The subject of this study is the English teacher at SMPN 1 kota Mojokerto who teach the students using “What You Might Find” board game in teaching vocabulary class. There are some steps the researcher used in collecting the data, they are; making the observation field note, interviewed the English teacher, and drawing conclusion. The result of this study shows that the teacher used pre-teaching, whilst-teaching, and post-teaching in implementing this board game. In pre-teaching, the teacher explained the steps and rules of “What You Might Find” board game. In whilst-teaching, the teacher implemented the game to teach vocabulary following the steps and rules she had explained to the students. In post-teaching, the teacher and the students and the students reviewed what they had learned in the class that day. The researcher found two advantages of “What You Might Find” board game, namely; it makes the learning process joyful and it makes the students cooperate and coordinate to their peers very well. The researcher found two disadvantages of “What You Might Find” board games, namely; it increases the teacher’s workload and need more time to design the board.
