Abstract

The researcher conducted this research to reveal learners’ difficulties from vocabulary use as they learn it by memorizing individual vocabulary list and learning grammatical tenses when learning English. But in reality, most English words are used in groups (collocation), not word by word. Thus, this research is conducted on the use of English collocations by Thai students. The aim of this study was to analyze English collocations extracted from three Thai students’ theses with two points of the research problems. First, what are the types of collocation in theses used by Thai students at University of Muhammadiyah Malang? Second, what are the patterns in theses used by Thai students? Furthermore, this study uses descriptive qualitative as the design of this research because the study would describe the types and the patterns of English collocations used by Thai students. The instruments used to obtain and analyze the data in this research are human instrument and document. In addition, the researcher collected the English collocations in three theses used by Thai students at University of Muhammadiyah Malang. The main finding showed that in all three Thai students’ theses, the writers used two types of English collocations which are lexical collocations type and grammatical collocations type. Most of the collocation type was used in theses by the writers is grammatical collocations type than lexical type. In addition, this study found several patterns of English collocation in thesis writing used by Thai students. There are four patterns belonging to lexical collocation; (1) Adverb + Adjective, (2) Adjective + Noun, (3) Noun + Verb and (4) Verb + Noun. And three patterns come from grammatical collocation including (1) Verb + Preposition, (2) Adjective + Preposition and (3) Noun + Particular form of verb. In learning process of EFL, English collocation should be included by English teachers as a part of four skills development and raise awareness of collocations to help learners pay more attention to their collocations use in the production of the language. So learners have a consciousness about the importance of collocation in English proficiency.
