Abstract

Speaking is very significant since the competence of people who study English can be seen from their skill in speaking. Moreover, knowing student’s perceptions toward local teachers in speaking skill is also crucial. Therefore, the purpose of this study was discovering the students’ perceptions toward teaching techniques that were employed by local teachers in speaking class. This study employed descriptive qualitative research design. The subjects comprised the students in the seventh semester who have learned speaking with the local teachers in English Language Education Department. In collecting data, the researcher utilized closed-ended questionnaire as the primary instrument and interview guide as the secondary instrument for the purpose of validating the data. The result of this study showed that students’ perceptions toward local teachers in speaking class had two classifications, such as: positive and negative perceptions. The positive student’s perceptions were that the local teachers could help the students’ to solve their problems easily since they have the same experience and cultural background. The local teachers could also be the best model for their students in speaking class. Nevertheless, the negative students’ perceptions were that the local teachers had less creative exciting teaching techniques. Furthermore, the local teachers had the tendency to use traditional or monotones methods in speaking class.
