Abstract

This research was motivated by the phenomenon of a couple who both came from the Paciran sub-district but the men who applied. The engagement tradition in Paciran sub-district is generally carried out by women to men if both come from the Paciran sub-district. The formulation of the problem of this research is how the negotiation of identity in the pre-engagement tradition of couples engaged in engagement is not in accordance with the traditions in the District of Paciran, Lamongan Regency. This study aims to describe clearly the identity negotiations in the pre-engagement tradition of couples who engage in engagement not in accordance with the traditions in the District of Paciran, Lamongan Regency. This study uses theoretical discussion to be able to describe the pre-engagement tradition carried out by couples who are not in accordance with the traditions in the Paciran sub-district. The discussion of the theory used in this study includes Identity Negotiation proposed by Ting Toomey to describe negotiated messages because of differences in the traditions desired by pre-engagement. The structure of the negotiations written by Robert Heron and Caroline Vandenabeele were used to describe the negotiation process starting from preparation, discussion, negotiation and also agreement. cultural characteristics suggested by Lonner and Malpas to describe that culture exists to be preserved from generation to generation. Cultural elements that are used to describe Javanese beliefs, public perceptions and symbols. Cultural identity and the formation of a cultural identity to describe the background of the couple's identity so as to make a different engagement tradition. This study uses qualitative research methods with descriptive types. This study uses a purposive sampling technique with a number of criteria that have been determined, so that getting 4 subject pairs who did the engagement was not in accordance with the traditions in Paciran sub-district and 2 informants who were community leaders in the Paciran sub-district who understood local traditions. The method of collecting data in this study uses interviews, observation and documentation. The data analysis technique of this study used the interactive models of Miles, Hubberman and Saldana with validity tests using source triangulation. This research focuses on pre-engagement identity negotiations and the formation of cultural identities in couples who engage in engagement not in accordance with tradition. The results of this study are the existence of a pre-engagement identity negotiation process to maintain identity or leave identity and also agree on whether there is a calculation of Java. The engagement tradition used is different, these couples only do reward, Javanese calculations and marriage. The identities of these couples are indigenous to Lamongan, but once lived outside Lamongan so they chose men who applied. In Paciran sub-district there is also no specific learning to preserve culture so that the culture begins to fade. The conclusion of this study is that identity negotiations occur because of differences in tradition that are wanted to be done for engagement in the Paciran sub-district, Lamongan district.
