Abstract

English is one of the international languages that has many enthusiast. It forces students to learn English from an early age to face this era. To be able to understand what is taught by the teacher, students must know the meaning while learning process. Vocabulary plays important role in English. Scrabble is a media that can be used in language learning to improve students’ vocabulary. This research is intended to see whether or not there is an improvement in vocabulary of seventh-grade students of Laboratorium UM Junior High School after playing scrabble. The researcher used quasi-experimental design. 62 students participated in this research which were divided into two groups. The first is the experiment group and the second is the control group. The instruments used were pre-test and post-test. Data obtained from research,were processed through SPSS for Windows computer program. Based on the analysis data, the results of SPSS find that t-observed is greater than t-table (3.693> 1.697). The effectiveness after playing scrabble is seen from the pre and post-test’s score increases. Then, students even nervous can introduce themselves by going forward and the class becomes more interesting and full of challenges. In addition, Null Hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and Alternative Hypothesis was accepted (Hi).
