Abstract

This study investigates the students’ anxiety in Speaking 4 subject material in English Language Education Department (ELED) at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM). Anxiety occurs almost in every part of learning language skills, especially in speaking. It will hinder students’ achievement if the anxiety is being underestimated. This study defines the types of anxiety found in Speaking 4 subject. It intends to recognize its type and also the causal events of anxiety that experienced by students who took Speaking 4 subject. Descriptive design and qualitative research approach were used in this study. The research subject was the 4th semester students of ELED. In collecting the data, the writer conducted the Focus Group Discussion (FGD). The writer took eight class, they are A-H class. There are 35 participants, they were chosen randomly and voluntarily. The writer only found two of the three type of anxiety, they are state anxiety and situation-specific anxiety. Furthermore, the causes that trigger anxiety such as communication apprehension, fear of negative evaluation, and test anxiety.
