Abstract

Communication strategies are refered to an indivual effort to solve the gaps in speaking in order to avoid the communication breakdown. This research has two research purposes namely: 1) The speaking problems faced by intermediate level BIPA students in learning foreign language and 2) Kinds of communication strategies used by intermediate level BIPA students to solve the speaking problems. This research used descriptive qualitative design, the subject of this study was seven students on intermedite level BIPA program. The instruments used to collect the data were observation fieldnote and questionnaires. The results of study show that there are four speaking problems faced by intermediate BIPA students such are 1) Nothing to say 2) Mother tongue use 3) Error in pronounciation and 4) Grammatical error. Furthermore in order to solve those speaking problems the intermediate student at bipa used six kinds of communication strategy there are 1) Fluency oriented strategies 2) Negotiation for meaning 3) Accuracy oriented strategy 4) Message reduction and Alteration strategies 5) Non-verbal strategies and 6) Message abandonment strategies.
