Abstract

English is the most widely spoken language in the world. In communicating with language someone must place the language correctly or pronounce the language with the appropriate sound, so the language can be accepted and understood by others. Pronunciation is an important thing that is understood and be mastered by a language learner especially learners of English, because this is very important in the aspect of speaking. The purpose of this research is (1) to know what the difficulties in pronunciation relate to the phonological system faced by students in the Pronunciation Practice Class at IKIP Budi Utomo Malang, and (2) to know what the causes of the difficulties are related to phonological system in the Pronunciation Practice Class at the IKIP Budi Utomo Malang. The design of this research is use qualitative descriptive research in the sense of analyzing and describing what are the difficulties and causes of pronunciation in English. The research subjects were students in two classes Pronunciation Practice Class in the first semester at IKIP Budi Utomo Malang. Data is collected from the results of direct observation of pronunciation learning in the classroom, interviewing lecturer who teach pronunciation, and conducting document studies related to pronunciation learning resources. Analysis of data from this research uses the Miles &Huberman model, namely data obtained starting from the process collecting data, reducing data, presenting data, and conclusion. The results of this research indicate that the difficulties in pronunciation are very diverse related to production sound language and formation and classification of language sounds. As for the causes of the difficulties it can occur due to stress and mother tongue influence. In simple terms it can be concluded that the difficulties in the pronunciation and causes of pronunciation difficulties with regard to phonological systems occur with regard to aspect segmental and suprasegmental sound of English.
