Abstract

Literature is literary works which come from someone’s thoughts, ideas, and experiences to express their feelings. Poetry is one of the types of literary works. In teaching poetry, the right strategy is needed by teacher. Teaching strategy is the planning steps or activities which are designed to run the class effectively and overcome the problems that occur in the class. This study digs out the kinds of teaching strategy that were used by John Keating in the movie Dead Poets Society. It is also explained the implementation of each strategy, the problems found when the main character implemented the strategies, and the solutions to solve each problem. The research method which is used in tgis research is qualitative descriptive research design. It analyzes and describes the educational situation in the movie Dead Poets Society. The object of this research is the teaching strategy used John Keating who is a teacher and main character in the movie. Therefore, the instrument of this research is the resereacher iteself. The result of analysis shows there are two teaching strategies which were used; it is visual literacy strategy and socio-cultural strategy. In visual literacy strategy, John Keating asked one of his students to do the interpretation of an image, but, before that he gave an example how to interpret an image. In socio-cultural strategy, John Keating told his students about his old reading poetry community, it is Dead Poets Society, he only told his students when, where, and how it was worked, and he let his students run it by themselves without his guidence. The teacher faced two problems when he implemened the strategies. The problems are, there was student who did not want to be involved in class activities and also there was student who did not take the class seriously. The solutions which were used to solve the problems are, John Keating was giving a chance for students to proof his ability and another solution is, he was giving motivation, not only only to the related student, but all students.
