Abstract

Writing is one of the communication skills that students have difficulties in. There are lots of students who encounter various difficulties in composing a paragraph. This study was conducted to examine the students’ linguistic difficulties in composing a paragraph. The analysis of the students’ linguistic difficulty would cover grammar, vocabulary, spelling, punctuation, and capitalization. In conducting the research, the researcher utilized descriptive qualitative design to acquire the information related to linguistic difficulties in composing a paragraph. There were 34 students of eleventh graders at MA Muhammadiyah 1 Malang academic year 2018/2019 chosen as the sample of this study. Upon the process of data collection, the document of writing task given by the teacher was utilized as the main instrument. The second instrument was interview. The data were analyzed descriptively. The results of the research showed that the students had difficulties in composing a paragraph, especially in grammar, vocabulary, spelling, punctuation, and capitalization. Grammar was the most difficult aspect with 107 difficulties in total. Vocabulary was the second most difficult aspect faced by students with 80 difficulties. The third difficulty was spelling aspect with 51 difficulties. Punctuation became the fourth difficulty aspect faced by students with 30 difficulties. The last was capitalization aspect with 18 difficulties. The difficulties include all the elements of linguistic factors. The main linguistic difficulty faced by eleventh graders at MA Muhammadiyah 1 Malang was grammar.
