Abstract
Reading is the most essential skill that should be mastered by students in todays’ society because reading is interdisciplinary skill. Knowing the students’ ability in reading by seeing the point of view of the teacher is very important due to teachers has a vital role in education. The purpose of this study was to reveal the perception of English teachers towards the students’ reading ability. This study used descriptive qualitative research design in order to describe the study more deeply. The subjects of this study were two experienced English teachers who taught English at eleventh graders at SMA Negeri 02 Batu. In order to gather the data, semi-structure interview guide was conducted as the primary instrument and validated it with document analysis. Based on the data analysis, the conclusion of this study was revealed that the English teachers mostly had negative perception toward their students’ ability in reading. The ability of the students was low and they had lack of reading habit that could influence their academic achievement and knowledge improvement.
