Abstract

Education has an important role in developing the students’ mature personalities and integrities so they are able to channel their competencies for the progress of the nation and state. Quality competency is obtained with a high willingness to work together, critical thinking, logical thought, and creative opinion that can be evolved by learning mathematics. Mathematical literacy is one of the School Literacy Movements which is a program from the government to be implemented in schools as lifelong learning. Muhammadiyah 9 Malang Elementary School has applied mathematical literacy by means of mathematical habituation activity. This research aims to represent the practice of mathematical literacy thru mathematical habituation activity in third-grade students at Muhammadiyah 9 Malang Elementary School, which discusses the enforcement of its activities, existing barriers, and solutions. This research employed qualitative research with a qualitative descriptive approach, which was conducted in the even semester of the 2018/2019 academic year. Data collection techniques gained by way of observations, interviews, and documentations in order to obtain data relating to the performance of mathematical literacy via mathematical habituation activity in third-grade students of Muhammadiyah 9 Malang Elementary School. The selected informants as data source were the principal, the curriculum coordinator for mathematical habituation, the teacher in third-grade of Salamah class, and the third-grade students of Salamah class. The research’s outcomes of the mathematical literacy implementation by way of mathematical habituation activity in third-grade students of Salamah class at Muhammadiyah 9 Malang Elementary School revealed (1) the mathematical habituation implementation refers to seven components of mathematical literacy, (2) the obstacles which are faced in the form of the diversities of students’ comprehension characteristics, limitations, and adjusting time for its execution as well as the lack of variety in the usage of media tools in its application (3) utilized solutions in overcoming barriers by arranging the schedule as guidelines in the application of routine mathematical habituation activity and monitoring which is carried out by curriculum coordinators for mathematical habituation in material targets, executions, and results.
