Abstract

Education plays an important role in shaping and strengthening students’ characters. The affirmation of character building is part of the national mental revolution movement which is carried out to reinforce students’ characters through three main approaches, namely class-based, cultural-based, and community-based. Purwantoro 1 Malang Elementary School has implemented class-based character building reinforcement in thematic learning. This research purposed to describe the implementation of class-based character building reinforcement in first grade of thematic learning, constraints, and efforts which were executed to overcome the issues of program implementation. This research used a qualitative approach with descriptive research method. The source of data was the principal, curriculum section, and 1C class teacher. This research was conducted in even semester of academic year 2018/2019. Data collection technique employed observations, interviews, and documentations to obtain data on the application of class-based character building reinforcement in the first grade thematic learning at Purwantoro 1 Elementary School Malang. The results revealed that, (1) the implementation of class-based character building reinforcement in first grade thematic learning at Purwantoro Elementary School Malang is established through the learning plan stage, the implementation of the learning process, and the assessment of the learning process. The instilled character values are religious, nationalist, mutual cooperation, and integrity. (2) Constraints in the form of planning related to the teachers’ abilities to produce the learning activity which emerges to character building reinforcement values and assessments related to the character building reinforcement program. (3) Efforts that are executed to overcome problems, such as sharing and training, creating systematic learning plan, and merging the assessment in the learning process.
