Abstract

Background: The aging process causes inability to carry out daily activities. The active elderly will move a lot so that it triggers muscle contraction, contractile protein synthesis is faster, then it will increase the actin and myosin filaments in the myofibril which cause muscle mass to increase. Increased component of muscle metabolism, ATP also increases so that there is an increase in muscle tightness. Good muscle strength can help maintain body balance. Research Method: This study used an an analytic observational design with a cross sectional study type. Normality test using Kolmogorov-Smirnov, correlation test using Rank Spearman. Barthel index is used to identify the activity of daily living and Time Up and Go Test to measure body balance in the elderly. Result: Available 49 respondents with independent abilities, moderate dependence as many as 6 people and a mild dependence on 19 people. Normal TUG scores are 39 people and 35 are not normal. Conclusion: There is a significant and strong correlation between Activity of Daily Living (ADL) and body balance in the elderly at Pandanwangi Elderly Posyandu, Blimbing, Malang City.
