Abstract

Group assignment has recently become a common practice in schools and institutions around the world. It provides comfortable, engaging, and meaningful learning environment. It enhaces students critical thinking skills, improves problem-solving strategies and internalizes content knowledge. Although some studies have been carried out on students’ perception toward group assignment, yet they merely focus on local students and none of investigations examine international ones that play an essential role in learning environment. Therefore, this study aimed at revealing the local and international students’ perception toward group assignment of English Language Education Department at University of Muhammadiyah Malang. Also, this study attempted to compare local and international students’ perception toward group work. The adapted version of Daba, et. al. (2017) questionnaire was utilized as the main instrument in collecting the data from the entire participants who consisted of 7 local students and 7 international students. Their responses were analyzed statistically by calculating the mean, standard deviation and percentage of the responses. This study also utilized interviews as the instrument to get rich information about the students’ perception. The result showed that local and international students prefer group assignment than other types of assignment (such as individual assignment or individual presentation). Local and international students perceived group assignment positively because it benefits their academic achievement where they can exchange their knowledge and information about the project/task with variety of students background so that they will have greater understanding related a particular subject. Also, they found positive value that could build up their personal traits such as self-confidence, team work skill and prepare themselves to get ready for their professional job in the future. Besides, this result found that local students have more positive perception compared to international ones. Local students stated that group assignment helps them to finish the task easily while international students consider group attendance as the reason caused them showed their less positive perception. Thus, the result indicates that this learning approach can be implemented by EFL teachers when teaching English in class due to its effectiveness that not only helps local students but also international ones to boost their academic and non-academic development.
