Abstract

Nowadays people tend to speak more than one language and the phenomenon that often appears in bi- or multilingual is code-switching. This study presents the use of code-switching consisting of three types namely; intra-sentential, inter-sentential and tag switching that deals with two different nationalities; Thai and Indonesian. In this case, the study focuses on the code-switching use in vlog which earns must attention currently. The research aims to find out the types of code-switching used by Thai and Indonesian vloggers and to identify the difference in using code-switching of two different nationalities. Thus, there are three research questions in this study. First, What kind of code switching do Indonesian vloggers use?. Second, What kind of code switching do Thai vloggers use?. Third, What is/are the differences between Indonesian and Thai vloggers in using code switching?. The subjects of this study are two Indonesian vloggers and two Thai vloggers who have stayed abroad. The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative. The data were observed and extracted into transcription for finding the use of code-switching. To find out the differences, the researcher becomes Human instrument to analyze the data. The results found that Thai vloggers have applied two types of code-switching in this research namely, intra-sentential and inter-sentential switching, while Indonesian vloggers have used all three types: that are intra-sentential, inter-sentential switching and tag switching to deliver their speech in vlog. Furthermore, this study found two different styles from two nationalities of using code-switching. First, the different styles in using intra-sentential switching that Indonesian prefer to use collocation or phrase, while Thai have used single word. Second, the different styles in using inter-sentential switching namely, Indonesian have used next utterance with continuing meaning, while Thai have used next utterance either in the different content or in the same meaning.
